The Housing Authority of the City of Erie is seeking comments on a lease change that would increase the charge for late public housing rental payments.

The Authority intends to amend paragraph 4 of its public housing lease to increase the charge for late payment of rent from $10 to $25. The late charge will be imposed on rental accounts that are not paid in full by the 10th day of any month. Currently, the late charge is assessed on the 20th day of the month.

The current $10 late fee has been in effect for over 25 years. However, the Authority still has a significant number of tenants who do not pay their rent on time. The increase in the late fee should act as an incentive for residents to pay their rent on time.

According to the lease agreement, all rents are due on the first of the month. The 10 day grace period before the late fee is imposed is a courtesy to our tenants. It should not be abused.

Due to the drastic reduction in funding to support the Housing Authority’s programs and services, it is imperative that rents be paid when they are due.

It is the intention of the Housing Authority to implement this lease revision on May 1, 2014.
