A grand total of  $34,239 was raised in the 16th Annual Ellen Curry Memorial Golf Tournament, which was held August 13 at the Lake Shore Country Club, 5950 Lake Shore Drive, Erie.



The tournament is the sole yearly fund-raiser for the Curry Foundation, which sponsors scholarships for public housing children.

Since 1998, the Ellen Curry Foundation has awarded 100 scholarships to public housing children to attend parochial elementary schools.  The total value of the scholarships awarded is more than $374,179.

This year, 18 children will be able to attend parochial schools by virtue of their selection for a Curry scholarship.

Another five students will receive college scholarships.

Major sponsors for the 2012 tournament are the Curry Foundation, Marquette Savings Bank, and Waste Management. Honorary co-chairs are Joseph Sinnott, Mayor, City of Erie; Michael Edwards, CEO, Marquette Savings Bank; and, Rich Carniewski, Senior District Manager, Waste Management.

Ellen Curry served on the Housing Authority Board for 29 years, until her death in 1996. Ellen promoted “people programs” for public housing residents, including: Head Start, Day Care, Adult Education, Youth Centers, Drug and Alcohol Prevention, Domestic Abuse Counseling, and Economic Self-Sufficiency.

Ellen left a portion of her estate to establish the Ellen Curry Foundation for the education of public housing youth. The net proceeds from the fourteenth Annual Ellen Curry Tournament will go to the Curry Foundation’s Scholarship Fund.
