The finale of the Erie Housing Authority’s 10th Mentor/Youth Golf Program was held Saturday, August 6. at the City of Erie’s Joseph C. Martin Golf Course.

The seven-week program was sponsored by the Authority in partnership with the Millcreek Golf and Recreation Center and the City of Erie. It began June 20 at Millcreek Golf and Recreation Center.

The finale, a golf tournament with 14 young public housing residents, partnered an adult mentor with a young golfer for a morning of fun and friendly competition. Tournament rules are set up to make every team competitive no matter what their skill level.

The seven-week mentor/youth program included weekly group lessons, one-on-one golf instruction and encouragement with a mentor, a Putt/Pitch and Drive Contest, in addition to the August 6 tournament finale.

PGA Golf Professional Karen Bukowski, with assistants and twelve mentors, provided instruction.

The program taught golf etiquette in addition to putting, chipping, driving, and club selection. "The whole idea is to expose children to something they may be able to do for the rest of their lives, and give them the benefit of being with mentors," said John Horan, executive director of the Housing Authority. "Over the 10 years that the golf program has been offered, several of our young residents have gone on to participate on local high school golf teams. They all received their first experience with the game of golf through our program," said Horan.

Public housing residents from 9 to 16 registered for the program through the YMCA of Greater Erie and the John F. Kennedy Center, which administer on-site youth programs in the John E. Horan Garden Apartments, Erie Heights/Pineview and Harbor Homes housing developments. The YMCA and the John F. Kennedy Center provided transportation to and from the lessons and special events.
