HACE strives, through its youth programs and activities, to teach our children about life and what life has to offer.

In the summer of 2009, we think we did just that -- everything from sailing to golfing to horseback riding to theater to music to fine arts.

In the field of fine arts, our young residents excelled in 2009.

Sixty children from the YMCA Art Club at the John E. Horan Garden Apartments and the YMCA Erie Heights/Pineview Kids Club attended a seven-week summer program to learn about fine arts, creating their own works ranging from paintings to paper mache sculptures.

They learned fine arts techniques and theories using different media, and at the end of the summer, had an art show at the John E. Horan Garden Apartments Kids Club. In October and November, their artwork was display edat the Blasco Library.

The children worked both inside and outside the classroom – at locations such as McDannel Run – to learn through art about everything from science and the environment to music.

Young residents learned art theory and techniques. They learned how to highlight and use shadows when drawing; how to mix and apply colors to paper; how to paint to classical music and how music creates mood and atmosphere.

And we learned, as we have learned many times before, that through programs like these it is easier to help build strong boys and girls than to repair broken men and women.
