The new playground at the John E. Horan Garden Apartments, complete with climbing apparatus, swing bars, and slides, opened in June, after its design and features were discussed and reviewed by residents of the Garden Apartments community and the Erie Tenant Council.

The new handicap-accessible facility replaced an antiquated playground and passes all the latest safety requirements.

Situated near East 10th Street and Tacoma Road, it is often visited by C.O.P.P.S. members Cpl. Chris Janus of the Erie Police Department, above, at left, and Scott O’Lone, Erie County Juvenile Probation officer. Part of their job is to interact with residents and youths in the neighborhood.

The playground is open until dark seven days a week year-round, weather permitting.

“We wanted to give our children an entertaining playground that is safe and handicap-accessible,” says John E. Horan, executive director of the Erie Housing Authority.

“It’s things like this that we feel are so important for the quality of life for young Erie Housing Authority residents.” All other HACE playgrounds have been updated recently to meet handicap accessibility guidelines.
