--- Updated June 16, 2009

The Housing Authority of the City of Erie is now accepting Section 8 housing applications. In the first three days, June 15, 16, and 17, the Authority received more than 600 applications.

Applications are available daily from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Authority’s Section 8 Program office, 606 Holland Street, Erie, PA.

Between now and July 5, the applications must be filled out and returned by mail. Starting July 6, applications may be made in person at the Authority's Section 8 Office. A waiting list is being established based upon the date and time applications are received in our office. Applicants will be contacted for a final application and determination of eligibility based on the date of their preliminary application.

Persons with disabilities who may require special accommodations relative to the preliminary application process are invited to contact (814-456-2028) the Section 8 Program office for assistance.

Prior to this week, the last time Section 8 applications were accepted by the Authority was March of 2007.

“The application process had been closed since then because of reduction in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and because the waiting list was so long. At the time, we had over 2,700 applications on file,” said John Horan, executive director of the Authority. "We have now exhausted that pool of applications."

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program is designed to provide rental assistance to income eligible families and individuals in the private rental market. Currently, the Authority provides affordable housing to over 1,000 families, elderly and disabled individuals through the Section 8 program.
