Jatorian Petty, a resident of the John E. Horan Garden Apartments, did his part -- and more -- to help raise funds through Erie's recent Erie Gives Day,  an online initiative to raise money for nonprofits.

Petty is a future star of the YMCA Kids Club Theater Program, and worked with the Kids Club and Cherie Kinem, director of YMCA Housing Authority programs, to produce a video urging people to donate to the initiative.

The fifth-annual one-day event was coordinated by the Erie Community Foundation and connected donors with more than 300 nonprofits that serve Erie County.

The initiative raised $2,821,934, a record amount.

Erie Gives raised $2,271,693 in 2014 and had collected nearly $6 million between 2011 and 2014. The successful project is modeled after similar efforts in Minnesota, Ohio and Colorado.

"We are very proud of youngsters like Jatorian Petty, who use the skills we help teach them not only to better themselves and their futures, but also to help the community in which they live," said John E. Horan, executive director of the Erie Housing Authority. "Jatorian is quite a role model."
