The Housing Authority of the City of Erie will be accepting preliminary Section 8 housing applications for the first time in years, beginning Friday, August (the 8th month) 8, 2014.The last time Section 8 applications were accepted by the Authority was June of 2009.
“The application list has been closed for five years because of reduction in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and because the waiting list was so long," said John Horan, executive director of the Authority. "At the time, we had over 2,700 applications on file."
The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program is designed to provide rental assistance to income eligible families and individuals in the private rental market. Currently, the Authority provides affordable housing to over 900 families, elderly and disabled individuals through the Section 8 program.
On-line preliminary applications will be available on the Authority’s website www.hace.org starting at 8:30 a.m. on August 8 and until 4:30 p.m. on August 21, 2014.
Interested parties may also obtain a hard copy of the preliminary application form at the HACE office, 606 Holland Street, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. starting Monday, August 4.
The paper preliminary application must be returned in the pre-addressed envelope provided by the Housing Authority and postmarked on or after August 8, 2014 but no later than August 21, 2014. Applications postmarked before August 8 or after August 21 will be returned to sender. A waiting list will be established based upon a random lottery that will be conducted on or about August 28, 2014.
Persons with disabilities who may require special accommodations relative to the preliminary application process are invited to contact the Section 8 Program office at 814-456-2028 or TDD 814-455-1797 for assistance.
